Matthias James Puetz, 64, of Lafayette, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 surrounded by his family.
He was born in Watseka, Illinois on May 16, 1958 to Edmund and Jacqueline Puetz. He grew up in both Fowler and Oxford, Indiana most of his adolescence with his five brothers John (Nanci), Doug (Michelle), Richard (Cindy), Max (Patty) and Randy (Arlene) Puetz. He later moved to Lafayette, Indiana where he met the love of his life Deborah (Deb) Lehnen. They married on March 12, 1983 and would be celebrating 40 years of marriage this year.
Matt worked construction most of his life at A&K, Lafayette and F&K, Flora and was due to retire in May 2023.
Surviving with his wife are two children, Erica Lockner (Daniel) of Ocean Isle, NC, Ryan Puetz (Kyle) of Lafayette, IN and four grandchildren Luna Puetz, Margaret Puetz, Axl Lockner and Frances Lockner. Also surviving are his 5 brothers and his mother Jacqueline Puetz of West Lafayette, IN and numerous nieces and nephews. He is proceeded in death by his father Ed and sister-in-law Nanci.
Being a grandfather; or “Boumpa” as the kids would come to call him, was his greatest joy. It was truly magnificent to witness the love he had for his four grandchildren. The boundless love and patience that he had for his grandchildren and family were virtues that they will hold onto for all of their lives and pass down to the generations.
Matt dedicated his life to his family and the ones he loved. He was a man of few words, but his words carried. He was an extremely loyal person both to family and craft. He valued loyalty of employment and sacrificed for the greater good. He was always quiet, never in a hurry, but always on time. He will be missed by all of those he touched. The steady hand that guides the wind.
